Courses & Activities

At Outlets Co-op Neighbourhood House, we aim to provide for all learning needs and interests. We offer a variety of informal, recreational and social programs and activities tailored to the needs and interests of our community. We also provide formal, pre-accredited education and employability courses with Learn Local Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) support.

Education & Employability Courses

Newport Community Education Centre has been delivering adult education programs to the local community since 1991. Our courses are designed to enable students to build confidence and progressively develop skills through tailored course pathways from beginners’ classes to more advanced learning and beyond – we will help you follow the learning path that’s right for you! 

We provide a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. Our experienced trainers take the time to understand and meet your individual learning needs. We provide tailored classrooms and equipment for a diverse range of programs and student needs.

Introduction to Computers

Want to build your IT confidence? This course is for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills in accessing information, resources, file management, emails, Microsoft Office, online safety and working with artificial intelligence (AI).

10-12 week course  |  2 hours per week

Digital Literacy on Computers

Interested in navigating computer applications? Further develop your IT knowledge, upskill and learn about various applications, software, utilities, social media, online shopping, government portals and more. Learn to back-up and organise your files. Understand cybersecurity and how to lookout for scams. 

10 week course  |  2 hours per week

Learn Digital Devices

Want to become tech savvy with your mobile devices like smartphones and tablets? This course is for beginners to intermediate level. Understand device settings, messages, emails, uploading/downloading, saving and sharing, troubleshooting, security and more.

Skills for Job Seekers

For job seekers at any stage, this course builds practical skills for finding and applying for work. Modules cover job search skills, applications, interview skills, and online communication platforms.

1. Job Search Skills: Finding suitable jobs, using job sites and understanding labour market information.

2. Online Applications: Creating resumes and cover letters, completing online forms and using AI tools appropriately.

3. Phone & Video Interview Skills: Preparing for interviews, confidence building, using Zoom and phone platforms.

4. Online Communication Platforms: Professional email, workplace messaging tools and digital etiquette.

2-4 weeks per module  |  2-4 hours per week 

Learn English for Everyday

Open to adults of all ages and backgrounds, beginners and intermediate. Develop skills and confidence in English for everyday situations – speaking, listening, reading & writing. Build knowledge of Australia and your surroundings through classroom activities and local outings.

15 week course  |  2 hours per week 

Sew & Chat

Learn practical sewing skills in a supportive environment. Be guided through using a sewing machine, reading simple patterns, measuring and cutting fabric, and completing creative projects such as tote bags, skirts and basic clothing repairs. The course encourages relaxed conversation, creativity and social connection while learning hands-on sewing skills.

Recreational & Social Programs

From arts and crafts to music, wellness, social connection and specific skill development, Outlets Co-op Neighbourhood House runs ongoing and ad-hoc programs throughout the year. These include regular classes, such as calligraphy, one-off exhibitions, workshops and come-and-try days scheduled based on community interest. 

Make & Mingle

Create, chat & learn together in a relaxed, welcoming craft space. Explore a mix of new and traditional crafts through fortnightly guided sessions, with rotating projects such as mosaics, embroidery, textiles, quilling, neurographic art and more.

This is a shared learning space: we warmly invite participants to suggest crafts they’d love to try, and to introduce or gently lead a session if they have a skill they’d like to share. No formal teaching experience needed—just enthusiasm and a willingness to craft alongside others.

Move & Connect: Health & Wellness

Take time to care for your body and mind in a supportive group setting. Monthly sessions with rotating topics and activities such as movement, nutrition and wellbeing.

Calligraphy​

Explore a range of different styles, layouts, decorated letters, illumination and how to use calligraphy both artistically and practically.
